Space Saving Solutions for Small Nurseries

For condo and small home dwellers, space is a valuable commodity there just doesn't seem to be enough of. With a family addition on the way, the situation is only going to get worse. Who would have thought babies need so much stuff? With diapers, wipes, diaper genies, change tables, and cribs it can get a little crowded in there. Here are some ideas to help make the most of the room that you have.

Toy Bins Organizer

Multipurpose change tables are a great place to start. Choose a table that has shelves and drawers that you can use to store diapers, wipes, and linens. Having diaper cream, nail clippers, hair clips, and wipes close at hand will help you tackle any situation that might arise during a diaper change. Some change tables can even be converted to a dresser as your child gets older.

Toy Bins Organizer

Hang clothes on colorful children's hangers. If your nursery is without a closet you will need a standing wardrobe. Due to restricted space it may be difficult to open doors or drawers, and you may want to select a model with no doors. These models may not be as visually appealing, but they do provide easier access to clothing.

Stem the invasion of the zoo of stuffed animals and toys your little one acquires with a toy chest or a modular stackable storage system. While a standard toy chest is great for a fast and easy clean up it doesn't make finding that one special toy a simple task. Some toy chests come with multi-colored bins and shelves inside them. Different colored containers at your child's eye level make it easier to find specific toys.

Another great idea for your child's plethora of stuffed animals is the hanging toy organizer that you can clip their favorite characters on. This helps get the toys off the floor without taking up as much space as a toy box or shelving unit. It can be hung in the corner of a room or in a closet. These hanging organizers come in many different colors and sizes for every decor.

Before you go buying a new home because you think you need more space, try out some of these space saving ideas for smaller sized nurseries and children's rooms. You'll be amazed at how much space you really have once all those toys are off the floor and in some ways you may find your compact nursery runs more efficiently than its full size counterpart.

Organizing Tips to Tame the Toy Room

If you've got kids, you've got toys. Tired of tripping over dolls, trucks, and blocks? Here are some tips on how to organize the toys so that they don't take over your home.

Toy Bins Organizer

Most parents admit that their kids have too many toys, so the first step is to pare down. When purging toys, divide and conquer by sorting into 3 piles:

Toy Bins Organizer

1. Damaged: toys that are broken or missing parts (these will be tossed)
2. Outcasts: toys that the kids have outgrown or never really played with in the first place (these will be sent to charity)

3. Favorites: toys that are enjoyed on a regular basis (these stay)

When taking toys to charity, get your children involved. Once they see the value in giving to those less fortunate, they may be more willing to let go.

Toy Storage Tips:

o Having too many toys in the playroom overwhelms kids just as much as parents. You can cut down on excess toys by rotating them. Get a large plastic storage container, label it 'toy library' and place a selection of toys inside it. Put the lid on the container and store it in an out-of-the way place for several months. Every so often, bring out the toy library and exchange the stored toys for other toys that the kids are bored with. The old toys will seem new again and engage the child's interest.

o Organize the toy room in zones: The dress-up zone, the dolls zone, the play kitchen zone, the craft zone, the building block zone, etc. This is the model used to keep kindergarten classrooms organized.

o When it comes to storing toys, traditional wooden toy chests are not very useful. Most kids empty them out and climb in or small toys get all tangled up, damaged and forgotten.

o Use small, clear, open plastic bins (no lids) on shelves and sort toys into similar categories to make finding and tidying up a breeze. Label them with pictures if your child is too young to read. Small, lightweight containers with handles are easier to pull off the shelf.

o Make sure shelves are low (no more than 3 shelves high) so kids can reach their favorite toys. Secure shelving to the wall with brackets to avoid tipping.

o For older children, use plastic freezer bags that zip up to keep small game pieces or puzzle pieces together. (Small children may put the bags over their heads, which could pose a hazard).

o Use hooks or clothing trees to hang dress-up clothes.

o A colourful tackle box with dividers is an ideal way to store small doll accessories on the top and favorite Barbie's on the bottom. Or, use it for Lego kits. Its portability is an added bonus when visiting grandparents or sleeping over at a friend's house.

o Children's books usually don't have spines, so placing them on a bookshelf makes locating favorite books difficult. Solve this problem by storing books in plastic bins with the title of the books facing front.

Tips to Maintain a Tidy Toy Room:

o To keep the toy room tidy, have a 15-minute clean-up time everyday and explain to kids that the alternative is spending a whole Saturday cleaning up. Use a timer and put on some of their favorite music to add an element of novelty.

o Do your part to cut down on toy clutter. Loot bags brought home from birthday parties are usually big clutter culprits. For your child's birthday parties, instead of handing out dollar store items that will end up on the floor, start a trend by giving . Gift cards from movie rental or book stores.

o When purchasing toys, choose those that stimulate imagination and creativity so children don't lose interest. Examples: black board, art supplies and paper, instruments, dress-up clothes.

o Request that family members and friends give your children the gift of an experience instead of a toy. This includes taking them to an amusement park, a movie, a concert, or paying for some music or sports lessons.

Take the time to teach your children how to keep their toys organized and the whole family will enjoy the benefits for years to come.

Organizing a Child's Closet and Room

Storage Racks: Adding shelving to your child's closet can create places for all of those little things that you do not necessarily need to hang.

Toy Bins Organizer

Stacking Bins: Bins are easily accessible by children and color coordinating or labeling each bin makes cleaning up a snap.

Toy Bins Organizer

Linen Storage: Children often have a lot of extra sheet sets and comforters. Making a space for extra linen storage can keep it from spilling over into a clothing area. You may want to use crates up on shelves to keep them separate. Another option is to put them in large shallow containers underneath the bed.

Laundry Hamper: Make sure that your child has easy access to a laundry hamper. Ones that match their room decorations will encourage them to actually use it. Teach them to put their clothes in as part of their morning and night time routine. Then, when it is full, they can help do the laundry.

Cabinet: Adding cabinets to a child's room can be relatively inexpensive. Cabinets make great spots for keeping games, puzzles, art supplies and books. If you have a young child or a baby, you can keep diaper changing materials, out of reach medicines, humidifiers and thermometers in a cabinet, safely out of sight and reach.

Nets: Nets are great for getting all of those stuffed animals off the floor and out of the toybox. They can really take up a lot of space. Putting them in a net also keeps them out where your child can easily pick which one they want to sleep with at night. Plus, the net makes a fun place to play stuffed animal basketball.

Pocket Organizer: Pocket organizers are great for shoes, but they can also be used for a plethora of other children's needs. Mittens and gloves, socks, small cars or building blocks, art supplies, you name it. As kids get older, it seems like the pieces of their toys get smaller and smaller. See-through pockets make organizing tiny pieces a snap.

Hooks and Clips: Hooks and clips can help keep backpacks, coats and scarves off the floor. Ball caps, book bags and anything that can hang can be placed on a hook. Then, not only is it put away, but it's easily accessible for quick bolts out the door. Wet winter coats are able to dry without getting other clothing wet.

Children's Hangers: Using children's hangers will help you get the longest life out of your child's clothes. Adult hangers can stretch out the shoulders of your kid's clothing. Getting exciting colors of children's hangers that match your child's room can make the closet more a part of their decorations. Using childrens hangers will encourage your child to hang their own clothes.

The Teen-Girl Zone - Tools to Organize Teenage Girls' Rooms

So, you have bravely decided to roam where more faint-hearted mothers dare not: The Teen-Girl Zone, a.k.a. your daughter's room! You want to help your teenage girls get organized, but you're not sure where to start. Well, as a professional organizer and mother of four teenage girls, I have a few tools to help you get your teenage girls get organized.

Toy Bins Organizer

Let me encourage you by reminding you that learning any skill takes repetition, reward and coaching. I also have a small word of warning-if you have a rocky relationship with your teenage girl, this could become a bit of a power struggle. You don't want to come between her clutter and emotions. May I suggest that you do a little research and determine what "organizational type" your daughter is. Organizing for Your Brain Type, by Lana Nakone is a valuable resource that will help you decide whether your teenage girl is a people person, innovator, maintainer or prioritizer. Knowing how she needs to organize may reduce your struggles in the Teen-Girl Zone! What is the most fun schedule to get organized? Get in the Zone!

Toy Bins Organizer

In the Zone

When you help a teenage girl organize her space, start with a few questions:

1. What do you love about your room?
2. What do you dislike about your room?
3. What things are in the right place that you definitely don't want to move?
4. What do you do in your room? (Sleep, dress, read, homework, etc.)
5. Do you like the color and general arrangement of your room?

Knowing the answers to these questions helps get you in the zone and guides the organizational process, helping you see how you can avoid struggle. These questions also give you an opportunity to uncover possible areas for incentive. Would your daughter enjoy new bedding or painting her room? Perhaps you can offer those as rewards to her when she has organized her room and maintained it for one month.

Prepared with the right information, you will have success in the zone.

Zoning

To a local government, zoning means determining how an area is to be used or developed-that's the kind of zoning you are going to help your teenage girl with. You know what zoning means to the average teenager! It's your job to help your teenage girl use these organizing tools to transform teenage zoning to space-use zoning.

Zone One-The Sleep Zone

It may seem obvious, but your daughter will be sleeping in the sleep zone, which includes the area immediately around your daughter's bed. You should ask her what she needs to get a good night's sleep. Make a list of those items and make sure that those items are in her sleep zone.

Some items to consider in the sleep zone are: the bed, pillows, blankets, an alarm clock, and nightstand. Depending on your daughter's habits, she may need a good lamp on her nightstand for reading; reading material; tissues; a water glass; paper and pencil; and chap stick. If there is no room for a nightstand, consider providing your daughter with a basket that can hold the things she needs that can be stowed under the bed or on a nearby shelf. A floor lamp or a lamp that can be clamped to her headboard may be good alternatives for lighting.

Here's a tip that can instantly make your daughter's room look orderly: have her make her bed every day. If this is a habit she has never developed, you could offer to buy her new bedding if she consistently makes it every day for a set period of them - one month is usually long enough to establish a new habit.

The last area to work on in the sleep zone is the space under the bed. Pull every thing out that may be lurking there. Sort through what needs to be kept in the sleep zone, what needs to be stored elsewhere, and what can be thrown away. My girls store bulky items like sleeping bags, overnight bags, and folding chairs under the bed.

Zone Two-The Clothes Zone

The Clothes Zone will probably take the most time of any zone in your teen girl's room to organize. Make sure you have time to complete this project in one session; it could take up to three hours to organize, depending on how many clothes your teen has. You will need storage boxes or bags and cleaning supplies.

I have created a process to help you get your teenage girl's clothes organized. Here are my seven steps to Clothes Zone Heaven!

Step One: Take all of her clothes out of her closet and dresser drawers and create categorized piles.

Pile 1-This season's clothes, shoes and accessories that you are wearing now. Keep only clothes that fit and that you like and use.

Pile 2-Out-of-season clothes, shoes and accessories that you are sure will fit next year and that you like and will continue to use/wear.

Pile 3-All clothes, shoes and accessories that are too small, you don't like, are stained or are beyond repair. (Bag up items to pass on to a sibling or friend. Or, you may want to take usable items to a consignment store or charity. Throw away everything that's in unusable condition!)

Step Two: Take out all games, memorabilia, toys and stuff. Decide what you will keep and what can be given away. Anything in poor repair or missing pieces should be thrown away.

Step Three: Clean the closets and drawers thoroughly while they are empty. Wipe down walls and shelves, and then vacuum the floor and cobwebs along the ceiling.

Step Four: Place this season's clothes, shoes and accessories back into the closet or dresser drawers. Hang or fold all clothes neatly. Make sure that jackets are buttoned or zipped. Group clothes by category: pants; shirts; skirts; and dresses together. Hang belts on hooks or hangers. Consider a shoe organizer, if your teen-girl has lots of shoes.

Step Five: Place off-season clothes, shoes and accessories in a clear plastic bin and store under the bed or in the attic. If your closet is big enough, you may store your office season clothes and other items in the back of your closet.

Step Six: Place all games, toys and memorabilia back in your closet on a shelf or easy to see place. If memorabilia is worth keeping, it is worth keeping well, so make sure that your teen has an appropriately sized box to store all items neatly. You will also want to take this time to help your daughter consider what items are truly worth saving and which things she might let go.

Step Seven: Now that all of your teen-girl's clothing and other belongings are neatly organized you can easily see what items she may need. Make a list and plan to purchase and replace needed items.

Now that you have completed the seven steps to Clothes Zone Heaven all your teen girl needs to do is maintain the new order. I have found that it goes well when my daughters take a few moments each week to make sure that they are keeping things stored properly. Remind your daughter to give you items that they try on and no longer fit or that become stained or otherwise un-wearable. Dealing with items as they fall out of use is easier than working through an entire closet. Also, encourage her to immediately put clothes away that she decides not to wear. It takes seconds to hang up one outfit. It can take 15 minutes or more to sort through and put away a pile of clothes!

Finally, you will want to make plans to revisit the Clothes Zone each season to repeat all seven steps.

Zone Three-The Study Zone

Zone Three is really a matter of preference. You need to consider where your daughter usually does her homework. If she most often does her homework in her room, not the kitchen table or sitting in the bonus room, then she needs a homework zone established in her room.

If she prefers sitting at desk, then have her sit down at her desk and think through all the supplies that she needs while she is working there. Ask her what she uses every day or weekly. When I am working with a client, I give items that receive regular use what I call prime real estate. Anything not related to the tasks your daughter does sitting at the desk, do not get to stay there. Keepsakes and memorabilia must be "containerized" and stored elsewhere. If your daughter prefers to work sitting on her bed or the floor, maybe all she needs is a basket of supplies that she can pull out when she is working. Next, make sure her Homework Zone is well lighted and that she has a comfortable chair.

You will also want to make sure that this zone is well supplied, include: a calendar, clear sheet protectors, notebooks, note pads, as well as pencils and pens with a carrying case.

Zoned Out

Now that you have worked through the three main zones of your daughter's room, you will almost always have items that don't fit into any of the zones. You may place these in a bin and go through them to consider whether you will keep them. Here's the test. Ask whether the item is used daily or weekly. If it is used that often, then it can stay.

With memorabilia and other items left, ask:

- Do you want to display the item-- Should the item be stored or placed in a container to keep it in good condition-- Do you want to place the item in a scrapbook or photo album-- Is there someone with whom you can share the item-

With collections ask:

- On a scale from one to ten, how much do you love this collection-- Do you need the entire collection or just a few favorites-- If the collection is important to you, are you keeping it well and where it can be enjoyed-If you both decide that a collection will be kept, assign it a shelf or container. When the space is full, attempt to purge the collection to make room for new items.

A final word of encouragement-if your daughter (or you!) struggle to let things go, try storing an item for six months. Agree that the item will be given or thrown away, if your daughter has not asked for it during that time. Remember this is a life skill! If your daughter learns to manage her possessions now, she will have less stress and be equipped to manage her own home some day.

3 Clear Plastic Containers With Lids Every Store Owner Needs

Clear plastic containers have multiple display, storage, and organizational purposes in a variety of realms, and clear plastic containers with lids add an extra perk. Retail stores can use these kinds of fixtures to display merchandise as well as store items not ready for display and organize items meant to help the owners, managers, and associates do their jobs, while restaurants can use them to store, display, and keep fresh and safe from dust and debris food items that might not otherwise be entirely safe in traditional, lidless containers.

Toy Bins Organizer

Also like regular plastic containers, clear plastic containers with lids come in a variety of shapes, styles, and sizes. Whether you manage a retail establishment or restaurant, below are three kinds of containers and bins with lids to help you store, organize, and display your merchandise.

NOTE: If you plan to use any of these kinds of plastic containers with lids to display any kind of food product that isn't wrapped, it's best to pair them with other display accessories like aluminum or plastic scoops or tongs. Scoops and tongs help customers retrieve the amount of food product they want without touching and possibly contaminating any of the rest of it.

Plastic Canisters With Lids

Plastic canisters with lids are nearly identical to glass or ceramic canisters with lids, as far as overall style and function is concerned, but they add an extra perk: they're plastic, which means they're less likely to break if they're dropped or bumped into and, if they do happen to crack or break, the plastic pieces are less like to harm your customers or employees.

Plastic canisters with lids work well in both traditional retail settings and restaurant or specialty food shops like bakeries, yogurt shops, and ice cream parlors. You can use these containers to display small convenience items like lighters or children's toys like bouncy balls, or edible items like unwrapped candy, gumballs, or sprinkles for deserts.

Plastic "Fish Bowls" With Lids

Plastic fish bowls with lids offer store managers, owners, and customers the same excellent display fixture option with an added kick - lids!

With plastic fish bowls with lids, you can store, organize, and display everything you can with regular fish bowls, but you can also store, organize, and display items that need protection from "sticky fingers" or dust and debris. These containers are great display fixtures for small kinds of merchandise like hobby and craft items (think beads and other baubles) as well as unwrapped food products (think unwrapped candy and gumballs).

Plastic Bins With Lids

Think of plastic bins with lids as larger, horizontal, and sometimes stackable versions of plastic canisters with lids. The size of these bins help them work extremely well for storing and displaying loose and unwrapped food products like pretzels, trail mix, peanuts and other nuts, unwrapped candy, and sprinkles for ice cream and yogurt. The lids take the benefits of these bins a step further by helping keep the food products fresh and safe from dust and other debris.

How I'm Decluttering My Home

I admit it. I'm a pile maker. Piles in the closet, piles in shelves, piles in cupboards, piles in the corner. I'm always digging through a pile somewhere looking for stuff. I was sitting down a couple days ago and thinking about getting better organized. A couple times, I've gotten the right idea & I have a few little plastic drawer carts for things like the kid's craft supplies. That works great. So I was thinking, how can I apply that to the rest of my "stuff?"

Toy Bins Organizer

I sat down & started making categories for the things I saw in the piles. I realized that the bulk of the piles were all my stuff. I never thought of it this way before, but it turns out to be categories for my interests. Child Development, Counseling, Zen Spiritual, Home Economics, Computer Games, Reading/Education, Physical activities, Clothes & body care.

Toy Bins Organizer

My husband's stuff consists of weights, hockey gear, books, computer gadgets and equipment and clothes. Then we have kids stuff such as bedding, toys, clothes. My husband's stuff and the kids' stuff all have places to go. I have designed our space for their stuff. Not mine. My stuff just gets piled in random obscure places that are left over. I give my interests and my stuff low importance. Wow. That was an eye opener.

I have a lot of books and files. So I started looking at which ones of my interests could go into filing cabinets. Child development is my preschool curriculum files, books and resources -that can definitely go in a filing cabinet grouped by topic. Counseling/Psych has a lot of research files and books. That can go in a file drawer. Reading/Education is mostly all books, so that can go on a bookshelf together. Zen Spiritual is books, papers & videos on Christianity, Reiki, Taoism, & Feng Shui. That can go in a file drawer. Computer games I want to keep can go on the bookshelf and my notes on computer games I'm designing, can go into a file drawer. I'm keeping only what I really need. Nice new books will go to the library, older stuff is going to the Salvation Army or the Goodwill thrift stores.

Home Economics is a big category for me. My craft supplies are decently organized in the drawer carts like I mentioned. However, I don't have a place for scrapbooks, so I will have to plan bookshelf space for those. Next are Finances. I used to have that nicely organized in a file cabinet, but we've moved since then & I never got started again. I found a good list of family records to keep and I'm shredding everything that is not in that list.

In the kitchen, I am designating part of a cupboard just for cookbooks & recipes. Also put my control journal in this cupboard. What is a Control Journal? Its a 3 ring binder for keeping track of chores, meal planners, grocery lists, supplies, and addresses of your friends, families, doctors, vet, insurance agent, etc. Two good places for forms and checklists are the Yahoo Control Journal Group and the Flylady

And then there is the physical activity stuff. I had designated a couple of shelves of a plastic bookshelf for my husband's hockey gear. But things don't stay on it well and it takes up a lot of room when stuff is side-by-side. I was thinking about those little plastic drawer carts that worked so well for my craft supplies. I had some old empty file boxes and so I filled them up with things like iceskates, tennis rackets, balls, & snow gear. 'Made my own drawers to put on the shelves - I don't put lids on them, letting things like a tennis racket stick out. This could also work with plastic bins or baskets. And you could even label them so that if kids or spouses get into them, they know where to put stuff back. This was so convenient, I think I'm going to get another one and do the same thing with tools.

The one I saved for last is the one I was most dreading: my clothes, jewelry, shoes, hair, skin and body care. Our bedroom has a tiny closet, so I used Fashion Mash to organize my clothes into outfits. I found that some things I never wear because they just don't match anything and so they are going with stuff that doesn't fit anymore to be donated. Since our closet is so little anything that can be folded like jeans, sweaters and even some T-shirts are going in drawers and on a shelf. We have this old wicker trunk, so my shoes went in it and now my cat enjoys sitting on it.

And here is where yet another drawer cart came to the rescue. One drawer has my hair stuff. A second drawer has my jewelry. The third drawer has the skin care, deodorant and everything I use in the morning. The last drawer has my nighttime stuff, fingernail polish and things I use less often. Makeup and most personal care products have a shelf life, so take the age of your products into consideration when you decide what to keep.

I'm still working on some of it. I'd love to hear back on anyone else's organization tricks & tips!

Closet Design Ideas For Children

A child's closet is much like their room, a total mess! One way to solve this problem is to put into use one of the many organization systems, or come up with your own closet design ideas. Just remember to keep it simple, and easy to use.

Toy Bins Organizer

A little girl would need the different clothing rods. But not to the extent that an older girl would. For a younger girl, a rod or two that only stretch halfway would probably be adequate. A younger girl would need more shelving then rods. Having the shorter rods would enable you to create a shelving system for toys to keep them up off the floor and to make the whole bedroom a tidier place.

Toy Bins Organizer

A little boy's closet has very little to hang, unless you don't use a dresser. For him, a single rod would more than suffice. Like little girls, a shelving system would be beneficial for a little boy's closet. Little boy's closet would also benefit from the use of some sort of bin on the shelf. Bins can vary in prices according to the type of bin; cloth bins tend to be more expensive than the standard plastic ones that can be purchased at dollar stores. Labeling bins would further enable young boys in both finding the desired toy and putting it back where it belongs.

Most older girls' closets have a lot of different length of clothes hanging in them: dresses, shirts, skirts, and pants. One way to create a more organized system is to have two closet rods: one on top for shorter things like shirts and skirts and one on the bottom for the longer items like dresses and pants. Pair that with shelving along the floor for shoes and perhaps some sort of shelving for all of the bags that most girls seem to collect, and you have an easy system that is inexpensive.

Like little boys, older boys do not need more than one closet rod. However, unlike the younger set, older boys need an easy way of discarding dirty clothes other than on the floor. A good way to accomplish this is to have some sort of receptacle in the closet. A sorter bin is a wonderful thing to use, as they can put lights, darks, and whites into separate areas. A sorter bin that is labeled is even better.

If you have multiple age groups in a room, you would benefit from having two closet rods and whatever shelving system as would fit, although the shelving would be more for the shoes than toys!

There are more ways then mentioned here to design an organized closet for children and teenagers. You can do it yourself as mentioned here, or you can purchase ready-made closet systems either from a store or online.

Kids' Closet Organizers

"Mom, I can't find my shoes!" "Dad, where's my backpack?" How many times a week do you hear these and similar cries? Probably more than you'd care to count. These frantic pleas for help can be heard daily in homes across America. Families late, children missing busses, parents stressed--all due to a serious lack of organization. Kid closet organizers can help.

Toy Bins Organizer

Most homes do not offer adequate closet space, especially in children's rooms. The space they do provide is often poorly designed, offering only one rod and a top shelf. With an effective closet organizer, however, you can actually double the storage capacity of your closet.

Toy Bins Organizer

Closet organizers for children's rooms are available in a variety of fun colors, such as bright primaries and pretty pastels. Traditional white and wood colors are also available. Organizers can be found to match most any décor, including popular children's characters.

Like regular closet organizers, child closet organizers are available in a variety of materials, such as wood, laminate, metal, and wire. Some organizers are even made of durable cloth canvas.

Kid closet organizers can be purchased as closet organizer kits or systems. Kits are designed for either the budget conscience or the do-it-yourselfer. Starting at , they contain everything needed for the closet. You simply choose the correct size and the desired components. Choices include such things as single or double garment rack, shelves, shoe cubbies, drawers, wall hooks, toy bins, and baskets. Assembly is required. Some kits are made of durable plastic and simply snap together; others will require tools.

Child closet organizers are also available as closet organizer systems. Systems are fully assembled. You simply measure the space, choice the components, and put in place.

Closet organizers can be floor-based or wall-mounted. Floor-based units give a built-in look, while wall-mounted systems keep the floor clear.

With a well-designed closet organizer, your child's closet can be neat and orderly--no matter your budget.
