An organized closet is the best closet, but how do you get it organized? You can purchase ready-built closet organizers from a home improvement store or on the web. Or build your own. But if you aren't into building closet organizers, you can design your own closet using exactly the items you need to get yourself organized. Here are some tips to get you started.
First, go through the clothes in your closet and remove everything you haven't worn in the last year or that doesn't fit. Now the clothes that are left in your closet have more room. Donate, sell or store the clothes you removed in another place. Now your clothes should have more room. If you still need more clothes room, try using tiered hangers that let you hang more than one item together. This way you can hang a blouse and skirt together, jacket and pants together or just more than one pair of pants. Buy a shoe organizer. Go through your shoes first and get rid of the ones you aren't wearing. Count how many pairs you have left and buy a shoe organizer to fit them. Organize purses on a shelf or in plastic bins. Buy a label maker and neatly label your plastic bins with their contents. Add a tie and belt rack. It's the easiest way to organize your small skinny items. You can also add scarves to the rack. Fabric-lined baskets work great for all your miscellaneous items. Again, using a label maker to label your baskets will save you lots of time hunting for items. Buy some pretty hangers that won't let clothes fall off. Some hangers have cut outs for straps; other hangers have attachments for your sweaters so the shoulders don't get hanger marks. Another clothes option would be to add another clothes rod to your closet. If you remove your current clothes rod, you can add a rod a little above where the old one was and another one a little below where the old one was. If you need space to hang longer items for the bottom rod, either buy a rod that attaches to the back wall of the closet (and is shorter than the length of the closet) or just hang a shorter bottom rod from the top rod using chains and S-hooks. Store all your winter items like gloves and scarves in a fabric-lined basket or a cool design box with lid. Add a label.
